Notes & circulating recordings
Exact date unknown.
4-track Recordings 1988 - These three tracks also come from a Cobain demotape. They were sub-titled as "Mellow 4-track shit" on these demotapes by Cobain. They were recorded at home on his 4-track and he plays all the instruments.
Cobain's house (?), Aberdeen, WA, US
Band members: Kurt Cobain (solo)
Recorded:
[U] Bambi Slaughter
[U] Beans
[U] Black and White Blues
[U] Clean Up Before She Comes
[U] Polly (Cracker)
[U] Sappy (Sad)
[U] Spectre (Misery Loves Company/Seed)
[U] About A Girl
[U] The Montage Of Heck
Sources: Some of these songs are are only available on bootleg releases, whilst others are also available in trading circles. However, in some cases trading circle versions sound better but they are less complete than the commercial bootleg versions.
A second generation tape featuring 'Polly', 'Sappy' and 'Spectre' is circulating amongst traders. These tracks are also available, in inferior quality on Outcesticide I and disc two of 'Live At Hollywood Rock Festival '93'.
A first generation tape featuring 'Beans' is available in trading circles. Although the trading circle version is the best sounding it is missing an intro present on the bootleg CD 'Dressed For Success'. 'Beans' also features on 'Outcesticide III', but on this release it is missing the intro present on 'Dressed For Success' and is worse-sounding than the ANA(1)>CDR version.
A first generation tape of the 'Montage Of Heck' is also available in trading circles. 'Outcesticide IV', however, includes a portion of the 'Montage Of Heck' tape not present on the ANA(1)>CDR version.
On the other hand the tracks 'Bambi Slaughter', 'Clean Up Before She Comes', 'Black And White Blues' and 'About A Girl' are only available on the commercial releases 'Outcesticide IV' and 'Dressed For Success' (in similar quality).
Notes: These songs are grouped together here but they were probably not all recorded at the same sitting or even in the same year. All are Kurt Cobain home recordings, recorded some time between 1987 to 1988. They are believed to have been recorded on a 4-track, and were presumably recorded at Cobain's contemporary residence.
'About A Girl' was recorded sometime during summer 1988 according to the bootleg Outcesticide IV. (7) The recording sounds like a boombox demo. The song features different lyrics to those on Bleach and is only available on Outcesticide IV and Dressed For Success. It is unknown whether anything else was recorded at that time. The fact that the Montage of Heck (11) features alongside 'About A Girl' on Outcesticide IV implies that these may be contemporary tracks.
